Oil Painting for Beginners: Day Session

Here's your sign to get that headstart in trying oil painting! We know that oil painting can be intimidating and it's often been seen as a medium that's not beginner friendly, but the good news is - we are here to change that!

Come and join us for a one day crash course in oil painting where you will learn everything you need to get started in this wonderful medium, and get to take home your own work of art. 

Whether you're proficient in another medium or you've never painted before in your life, this class is for everyone. 

What's included?

• 4 hour instructional class perfect for beginners

Event Schedule

11:00am - 11:15am: Welcomes and introductions

11:15am - 12:00pm: Introduction to oils

• Learn about the properties of oil paints, solvents and mediums
• Explore layering oil paints
• Discuss the process of painting dark to light 

12:00pm - 12:30pm: Still life and composition

• Learn the basic principles of composition
• Sketching or tracing our design
• Toning our canvas

12:30pm - 1:00pm: Catered lunch break

1:00pm - 1:30pm: Selecting a colour palette and blocking in our main colours

• Learn the importance of working big to small and simple to complicated
• Practice abstraction and generalisation to block in our main shapes

1:30pm - 2:45pm: Refining our painting 

• Work on developing form through the use of shadows and transition shades
• Add midtones and highlights 
• Discover and utilise hard vs soft edges

2:45pm - 3:00pm: Wrap up and conclusion

• Clean down 
• Open forum for questions and discussion
• Class conclusion

About your instructor

My name is Rachel, I'm a self taught oil painter and have been painting for around 3 years now. Everything I learnt, I learnt through art books, YouTube and Skillshare. I know how hard it is to crack into the world of oil painting and how difficult it can be to find accessible instruction - but I want to change that. So come along and let's paint the day away!

FAQ's

Do I need to know how to paint?

Absolutely not! This class is for beginners.

Is the venue accessible?

Yes! The Studio is wheelchair accessible. So that we can make you more comfortable, please let us know when registering if you have any particular accessibility requirements.

What if I can't attend on the day?

We understand that things happen and life can get in the way! If you are unable to attend the workshop please let us know as soon as possible as we purchase materials based on the number of attendees we have. If you let us know more than 7 days before the event we can refund your ticket.

Do I get to take my painting home?

Yes of course! Oil paintings do take some time to dry so you can take your piece home straight away or you can store it in the Studio to dry.

Is there parking/public transport access?

On street parking is available right outside the Studio along Camberwell Road. We are also just across the road from the Camberwell Civil Centre #75 Tram stop.
