This month the good folks at the Camberwell Antiques Centre were kind enough to host us for Sunday Sketch Club! Thank you so much to Tanya Gale and all her staff!
I've always loved antiques centres and vintage shops. I have fond memories of my Dad taking my Mum, sister and I to little country towns to explore antique markets and little nook and cranny stores. So visiting the Camberwell Antiques Centre was like stepping back in time.
Camberwell Antique Centre is one of Melbourne’s oldest and largest centres for antiques and collectables. The Centre was established in 1983 and has built reputation for its diverse collection. It has been run by Tanya and her staff since 1995.
The CAC has over fifty licensed dealers, many of whom are members of the Victorian Antique Dealers Guild. The collections include antique and period furniture, silver, collectable china, Australian pottery, sporting memorabilia, estate and vintage jewellery, vintage radios, linen, art-glass, oriental collectables, kitchenalia, ephemera, paintings, perfume bottles, dolls, toys and much more.
When I scouted out the CAC ahead of the session, I was at once inspired but completely overwhelmed with the idea of finding an art supply that would lend itself to capturing such a diverse range of items. In walking through the Centre I realised that one of the common themes throughout all of the vintages, styles and eras of items was pattern. With that in mind, I selected black paper and a white gel pen for everyone to use to try to find and capture some of the beautiful patterns within the collections - from lace doilies to carved timber, every piece had a pattern to share and explore.
For a little bit of fun, we also had a treasure hunt - finding different items hidden throughout the Centre. Whilst we did have some close calls I'm not sure anyone found all of the pieces before the end of the day!
Thank you again to everyone for a lovely day - can't wait for next month!
